EY Alumni Professor of Managerial Accounting and Information Assurance
Dr. Lawrence A. Gordon is the EY Alumni Professor of Managerial Accounting and Information Assurance at the Robert H. Smith School of Business, University of Maryland (UMD). He is also an Affiliate Researcher at the Maryland Cybersecurity Center, an Affiliate Professor in the University of Maryland’s School of Public Policy’s Center for Public Policy and Private Enterprise, and a faculty member in the ACES (Advanced Cybersecurity Experience for Students) program offered by UMD’s Honors College. Dr. Gordon earned his Ph.D. in Managerial Economics from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. His research focuses on economic aspects of cybersecurity, corporate performance measures, cost management systems, and capital investments. He is the author of over 100 articles that have been published in the accounting, finance and information/computer security journals. Dr. Gordon has been cited as one of the world's most influential/productive accounting researchers and is considered one of the pioneers in the area of cybersecurity economics (i.e., applying economics to cybersecurity). In addition to the Smith School of Business, Dr. Gordon’s research on cybersecurity has been supported by the U.S. National Security Agency and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. Dr. Gordon is also the author or co-author of several books, including MANAGING CYBERSECURITY RESOURCES: A Cost-Benefit Analysis and Managerial Accounting: Concepts and Empirical Evidence. He is also the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Accounting and Public Policy and serves on the editorial boards of several other academic journals. Dr. Gordon is the coauthor of the Gordon-Loeb Model for Cybersecurity Investments, which provides an economic framework for deriving an organization’s optimal level of cybersecurity investments. This Model has been featured in The Wall Street Journal and The Financial Times. In 2017, the U.S. Better Business Bureau recommended the Gordon-Loeb Model as a guide to help small businesses make cybersecurity investment decisions. In 2007, Dr. Gordon provided Congressional Testimony concerning his cybersecurity economics research before the Subcommittee of the U.S. House Committee on Homeland Security. An award-winning teacher, Dr. Gordon has been an invited speaker at numerous universities and professional conferences throughout the world. He has also been a frequent contributor to the popular press (e.g., The Wall Street Journal, Washington Post, Business Week, Baltimore Sun, The Financial Times, and the Washington Business Journal), as well as a consultant to several major organizations in the private and public sectors of the U.S. economy.
